  32.    INSTALLATION AND SET-UP

  34.    1. Select an appropriate disk drive to install EDGE.  You must have 
  35.       AT LEAST 400K of free space on the disk, plus enough disk space to
  36.       store your diagrams.

  38.    2. Run the install program (INSTALL.EXE) on the product disk to install
  39.       EDGEFLOW on your hard disk.  You should run install from the active 
  40.       floppy disk drive on which the program disk is loaded.

  44.    3. You will need to set an environment variable EDGEHOME to the directory
  45.       that you installed to.  For example, if you installed to c:\edge,
  46.  
  47.       C> set EDGEHOME=c:\edge

  49.       You will want to put this line in your autoexec.bat so that EDGEHOME
  50.       gets set up automatically every time you boot your machine.
  51.  
  52.    4. You will probably want to put the EDGEHOME directory in your DOS path
  53.       so that you won't need to be in that directory to run EDGEFLOW.

  56.    RUNNING EDGEFLOW
  57.     
  58.    1. Make sure the environment variable EDGEHOME is set as described above.
  59.    
  60.    2. Make the EDGEHOME directory the default directory.

  65.    3. Type "edgeflow" followed by a carriage return.

  73.    Remember,   most  operations follow the same sequence.  First  select  the 
  74.    objects that you wish to perform the operation on,  then press the  middle 
  75.    mouse  button  to invoke the main pop-up menu,  then select the  operation 
  76.    from the menu to apply to the objects you selected.

  78.    SAVE OFTEN:  Don't forget to save often just in case you do something that 
  79.    cannot  be  reversed.    Be  especially careful to  save  before  "global" 
  80.    operations  like  changing  properties on a large number of  objects,   or 
  81.    straightening a large number of connectors.

  83.    HOME:  As a new user, you may occasionally get "lost" in your diagram due
  84.    to an inadvertant action.  If this occurs, don't worry, your work is still
  85.    in tact.  By pressing the HOME key, you will automatically be moved to the
  86.    center of all the figures on the diagram.

  88.    QUICK  EXIT:    You can use control-ESC to exit instantly without  saving.  
  89.    You  will  not  be prompted even if you altered the  diagram.    USE  WITH 
  90.    EXTREME CARE!

  92.    FIXED SIZE:  Many diagrams require all figures to be of the same size.   A 
  93.    convenient way to have EDGEFLOW support fixed-sized objects is to set  the 
  94.    height and/or width lock for new figures.   When these locks are set,  new 
  95.    figures  created by pressing the INS  key in an open area automatically be 
  96.    assigned  the default figure size.  You can change the default figure size 
  97.    by creating a new figure of any  size  with  the  DRAG  mouse button or by 
  98.    resizing any figure.

  100.    TEXT OVERFLOW: If you add enough text to a figure that the figure wants to 
  101.    try to expand to accomodate it,  but the figure is height or width locked, 
  102.    your text will overflow the dimensions of the box.  When this occurs,  you 
  103.    will  hear a slight click with each character you type.   This is  only  a 
  104.    warning, no harm will come of it.

  106.    ZOOM:   Remember  that only the "real"  (unzoomed)  view shows  the  exact 
  107.    representation  of your diagram.   For example,  when you are zoomed in or 
  108.    out,   round-off  may make connectors that are  straight  appear  slightly 
  109.    slanted.  Text may not be visible and other details may be lost.

  111.    ESC:    Don't  forget to use the ESC key if you want to cancel  operations 
  112.    that are not complete.
